Issue Sep 17-23 2025: One of the world’s most prestigious demographers, Nicholas Eberstadt, predicts a future in which the global population will decline. In an essay published in Foreign Affairs entitled “The Age of Depopulation,” he stated the following: “Humans are about to enter a new historical era. For the first time since the Black (or bubonic) plague of the 1300s, the global population will begin to decline. Although that implosion was caused by a deadly fly-borne disease, the one coming in the future will be the result of choices made by people.”
