Dramatic Escalation of Daniel Ortega’s Vendetta Against the OAS in Nicaragua

On April 24, 2022, the regime of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua closed the offices of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the capital, Managua, and moved forward its planned withdrawal from the hemispheric diplomatic community. Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada announced his country’s immediate split from the OAS, saying that the “infamous organization” would no longer have offices in Nicaragua because, he asserted, the OAS does not contribute to the unity of the region and does not respect the sovereignty and self-determination of its peoples. The action came just a month after Arturo McFields, Nicaraguan ambassador to the OAS, denounced the regime of Daniel Ortega as “a dictatorship.”
