Huge crowds of pro-Lula protesters surrounded his car and chanted, “Don’t surrender!” when he first attempted to drive to the police headquarters, forcing him to retreat. With his conviction upheld by the Brazilian Supreme Court, Lula will now start a 12-year prison sentence for corruption and money laundering, though he and his followers insist he was the innocent victim of a political vendetta by Brazil’s old ruling elites who wanted to eliminate him as the leading candidate for president in the October 2018 election.
