Since mid-May 2022, the Chilean region of La Araucania and provinces Arauco and Biobío, located in the country’s macro-zone south, have existed under a Constitutional State of Emergency, a status which must be renewed every 15 days. In the wake of continued violence within the region, a proposal to protect Chile’s “critical infrastructure” sought to circumvent this requirement, but its passage has been frustrated by partisan division.
