Since 2010, Venezuela has been locked in a crippling economic crisis. The crisis is marked by hyperinflation and escalating rates of starvation, disease, crime, and mortality rates, as well as a mass exodus from the country. The crisis has only worsened under the government of Nicolás Maduro, in part due to low oil prices in 2015. Allegations of crimes against humanity have begun to surface against President Maduro, such as eliminating threats to his presidency, and the outbreak of COVID-19 has escalated a worsening situation.
