On July 17, Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was sentenced to life imprisonment for charges including engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, conspiracy to launder narcotics proceeds, international distribution of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other drugs, and the use of firearms. Guzmán, known for repeatedly escaping from Mexican prisons, will be held in a federal prison in Florence, Colorado, that is considered escape-proof and holds some of the United States’ most notorious criminals. Although previously incarcerated in 1993 and 2014, Guzmán escaped both times and continued to oversee the Sinaloa Cartel from prison. The U.S. Treasury has called him “the most powerful drug trafficker in the world.”
