On April 18, protests erupted in Nicaragua as a result of President Daniel Ortega’s announcement that pensions would be cut and taxes increased in an attempt to improve the country’s Social Security Institute. As a consequence of the protests, the Nicaraguan national police and paramilitary have killed between 270 and 350 protesters, more than the 160 protesters who have died in Venezuela. Overall, what began as a peaceful protest, turned into a violent crisis which has caught the attention of many countries.
