Yet Another President Threatened with Removal in Peru

Mar 27-Apr 02 2024: In late March 2024, President Dina Boluarte of Peru struggled once again to survive in office after being caught up in a controversy dubbed “Rolexgate” by the media. An investigation began after reporters noticed Boluarte’s Rolexes. The 61-year-old Boluarte was a lawyer and a middle-income civil servant before she was sworn in as Pedro Castillo’s Vice President, whom she replaced in office after he was impeached on December 7, 2022. Observers across the ideological spectrum doubted that she could afford the pricy timepieces. According to pollsters, Boluarte’s popularity is now below 8%, given that she has been linked to 49 deaths amid anti-government protests in the days following Castillo’s removal from office for trying to shut down Congress and rule by decree. Most of Peru’s recent former presidents are either in jail, under house arrest, free on bail, or unable to leave the country; one committed suicide before he could be arrested.
