Issue Feb 26-Mar 04 2025: On March 1, 2025, Yamandú Orsi, a former mayor of Canelones as well as a history professor, took the stage at Plaza Independencia to receive the symbol of office from outgoing President Lacalle Pou. Orsi took over the presidency as the leader of the left-leaning Frente Amplio, heir to the generation of two former Presidents, Tabaré Vázquez and José ‘Pepe’ Mujica. Orsi’s government arrived as Uruguay celebrated forty years of continuous democracy since the end of the military dictatorship (1973-1985). Pundits and commentators sought meaning.
