Widespread Doubt and Some Hope Concerning Venezuela’s Upcoming Elections

Issue Jun 12-18 2024: In late June 2024, in the runup to the July 28 elections in Venezuela, political experts, journalists, government officials, and regular Latin Americans who are worried about the health of democracy in the region all focused on the disturbing actions of the Nicolás Maduro regime’s ongoing attempt to undercut the opposition. After Maduro’s electoral apparatus disqualified the opposition candidate and frontrunner, María Corina Machado, the unified opposition pivoted and got behind former Venezuelan diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia. As the election approaches, the government has continued to jail opposition organizers and prohibit outside observers. Pundits, editorialists, and analysts had plenty to say.
