Watershed Elections in Peru and Mexico

After the June 6, 2021 election in Peru, with over 99% of the votes counted, candidate Pedro Castillo of the leftist Perú Libre party looked to have won a very close election over Keiko Fujimori of the right-wing Fuerza Popular party, with 50.253% to her 49.747%, according to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE). While Castillo addressed his supporters from the balcony of his party’s headquarters in Lima and declared himself the winner, Fujimori insisted (with no real evidence) that there was rampant fraud. In Mexico, the midterm election (also held on June 6) saw the Morena party of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (known as AMLO) lose its super majority in the national legislature, and suffer its worst defeat in Mexico City, a Morena stronghold. What is more, the four main opposition parties that formed alliances in various regional and local elections increased their numbers in a few places. Commentators and pundits across the region grappled with the task of assessing both contests.
