In 2010 the Yaqui tribe, which is based in southern Sonora, began yet another struggle to defend its rights. That year, the government of Sonora announced the construction of Acueducto Independencia. The Yaquis immediately objected because the project was approved without proper consultation with the people and, above all, because it will drain one million cubic meters of water from Yaqui River, which in part belongs to be the first inhabitants of the region, as was confirmed in 1940 through a presidential decree signed by Lázaro Cárdenas.
