Violence amidst Crop Substitution and Coca Eradication Plans

The Colombian government has begun a crop substitution program to reduce coca cultivation. Coca-growing families will receive payments for voluntarily eradicating coca crops, while forced eradication is occurring other situations. However, violence on the part of armed dissidents and criminal organizations threatens both the short-term and long-term success of the program, as coca growers face pressure from these groups not to sign or fulfill the government agreements.
