Venezuelan Composer “Tío Simón” Dead at 85

El Tiempo of Bogotá noted with sadness that Venezuelan singer and composer Simón Díaz, known to his compatriots as “Tío Simón” and author of the renowned song “Caballo Viejo,” died at age 85, said his daughter Bettsimar Díaz. “With tears I announce to my beloved country that my father passed this morning in peace,” she wrote of the social network Twitter. Díaz had withdrawn from public life several years ago due to suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. One of the last awards he received was an honorary Grammy in 2008, after which due to the progression of the disease, he retired. Simón Narciso Díaz Márquez, who dedicated his life to the study and interpretation of the music of the Venezuelan llanos or plains, was born on August 8, 1928 in Delhi, Aragua.
