Before the first wave of Russian emigrants flooded Uruguay’s lands in the late 1880s, Uruguay received its first visit by a Russian ship in Montevideo in 1860, but its relations with Russia began in 1857 with the exchange of messages between Gabriel Pereira and emperor Alexander II.
