United States Claims that Violence in Central America Is Lower than in Many US Cities, Putting Asylum Seekers Fate into Question
!!!
Issue Oct 21-27 2026: The Trump administration has announced that several areas of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras are less violent than many U.S. cities, putting the status of asylum seekers from such areas into doubt. Internal U.S.-government reports, which are used to assess such asylum claims, are making it more difficult for such status to be granted in these cases.
As reported in Prensa Libre of Guatemala City, the U.S. State Department has specifically identified Baltimore, Houston, and Memphis as cities with higher crime rates than those found in the Central American countries in question. CNN has reported that the documents containing these claims have been sent to the USCIS to be used in processing asylum claims. The reports add that victims of extortion and abuse may move to other areas within their own country, which may play a decisive role in whether migrants receive asylum status within the United States.
Last June, U.S. immigration judges rejected 94.1% of asylum applications; only 771 people were admitted to the country under this status, less than a quarter of those who were awarded asylum
three years earlier.
