The United Nations Calls on Mexico to Confront the Issue of Enforced Disappearances

In Mexico the coerced disappearance of persons is occurring throughout the country’s territory, and in many cases these crimes are committed by public servants. This was the conclusion of the U.N. Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED), which argued that all levels of the Mexican government must move with deliberate speed to address the problem, most recently highlighted by the case of the 43 missing “normalistas” of the rural teachers’ college in Ayotzinapa, Guerrero. The CED recommended the creation of a special unit to document and investigate the disappearances, which it said are widespread and largely go unpunished. The Mexican government, which initially resisted the CED’s finding, was widely encouraged to follow its recommendations.
