U.S. Vice President Pence’s Trip to Latin America
Vice President Mike Pence took a quick trip to four countries in the region in mid-August 2017. While the trek was overshadowed by President Trump’s clearly impulsive ejaculation about a possible “military” solution to the on-going crisis in Venezuela, any visit by a sitting U.S. vice president to Latin America receives ample coverage on many fronts. Pence spoke to various issues of interest to specific countries, though he also stressed issues that are clearly out of sync with Latin American concerns, while demonstrating yet again the confusing set of mixed messages coming out of Washington. Finally, Pence’s visit underscored the rather diminished influence the United States currently exerts over the region.
