On December 8, 2021, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Salvadoran government officials due to corrupt actions. The sanctions are under the 2017 Magnitsky Act that denounces corruption and criminal activity by freezing any of the accused’s assets in the United States and prohibiting the accused from doing any economic transactions. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has publicly denied the allegations.
