The Murder of Guatemalan Migrants in Northern Mexico Points to Broader Issues

In late January and early February 2021, Mexico continued to investigate the 19 charred bodies found in vehicles on a rural road in the northern state of Tamaulipas, in an area known as the “frontera chica,” near the U.S./Mexico border just south of Texas. The bodies were discovered on January 22, 2021. Among the few identifiable victims were Guatemalan migrants, though Guatemalan officials suspect that most were Guatemalan citizens. Mexico’s government is looking into the possible involvement of police or security forces in the massacre. Commentators tried to put the killings in the broader context of violence at the border, as well as the ongoing tide of Central American migrants, and the growing influence of criminal networks on the Mexico/U.S. border.
