Issue Jan 08-14 2025: On January 10, 2025, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro took the oath of office for a third term. The ceremony was condemned as illegitimate by both the opposition and most of the international community; the United States has offered a $25 million dollar reward for his arrest. Maduro ignored the objections to his unproven claim to having won another six-year term, insisting that his investiture was a “great victory for Venezuelan democracy.” The opposition candidate and widely recognized winner of the July 2024 election, Edmundo González Urrutia, said Maduro had “crowned himself a dictator” and staged a “Coup.” Commentators across the ideological spectrum voiced concerns and gamed out scenarios.
