Jun 25-Jul 01 2025: On June 29, 2024, Communist activist and former Labor Minister Jeannette Jara won the Chilean ruling coalition’s presidential primary, defeating Carolina Tohá, and lesser challenges from Gonzalo Winter and Jaime Mulet. Jara’s victory, following intense internal negotiations, made her the candidate in the November presidential election for the Unidad Por Chile coalition, including the Partido Comunista, Acción Humanista, the Frente Amplio, Socialismo Democrático, the Partido Socialista, Federación Regionalista Verde Social, and others. Jara obtained the support of President Gabriel Boric himself as the left in Chile moved to close ranks in a context of growing political polarization. Commentators had plenty to offer.
