The CELAC VIII Summit Largely Ignored by Latin America’s Leaders

Issue Feb 28-Mar 05 2024: On March 1, 2024, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held its eighth presidential summit in the Caribbean archipelago of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The event was marked by the high-profile participation of some, but not all, left-wing leaders and the complete absence of right-leaning ones. The coordinator of the pro tempore presidency of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Douglas Slater, and the host Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, called for effective regional integration in a region marked by diversity, yet of a total of 33 heads of state, only 15 attended, of which 7 were from the Caribbean. Pundits tried to unpack why most Latin American presidents were missing in action.
