Issue Dec 01-31 2024: During December 2024 Brazilians felt on edge politically. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva needed emergency surgery to relieve pressure from bleeding under his skull, which only heightened questions about how fit their 79-year-old leader is to continue with his duties, not to mention worries surrounding a possible fourth term. What is more, former President Jair Bolsonaro’s running mate in the 2022 elections, General (Ret.) Walter Braga Netto, was arrested by the Federal Police (PF) in connection with the alleged plot to prevent Lula’s inauguration. Many observers believe that coup plotters continue their efforts. Commentators and editorialists had plenty to say on both issues.
