Surprise Outcome in Argentina’s First Round Election

Issue Oct 18-24 2023: On October 22, 2023, Argentina held its general election. Sergio Massa, the current minister of economy and presidential candidate of the ruling Peronista Unión por la Patria coalition, came in first with more than 36% of the vote, over the far-right economist and member of Congress, Javier Milei of the La Libertad Avanza party, who garnered 30% of the total. Political pollsters and pundits had given the Peronistas up for dead after Milei had outpolled them in the PASO primaries in August. Political analysts and commentators worked hard to explain the outcome and game out the possibilities for the second and final round on November 19, 2023, when Massa and Milei will face each other again.
