Sulfuric Acid Spill Spurs Debate Over Economy Vs Environment in Mexico

On July 9th, the mining company Grupo México spilled 3,000 liters of sulfuric acid into the Sea of Cortés outside of Guayamos, Sonora, in Mexico. The company oversees most mining in the country, but this is its 22nd environmentally threatening incident in 20 years. Local victims, including miners, as well as academics and environmentalists are putting pressure on the government to make an example out of this incident. The Secretary of Environmental and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has responded with an investigation, and Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as AMLO, has discussed competition between economy and environment.
