The Stage Is Set For Colombia’s Historic Plebiscite On Peace

On June 23, 2016 the government of Colombia and the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia-Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) took one of the final steps in the peace process going on since 2012. They signed a ceasefire and prepared for the Colombian people to accept or reject their efforts. During July Colombians wondered whether this was really the beginning of the end of seven decades of armed struggle as the government promoted a plebiscite to legitimize the agreement made in Havana.  It will have to face dissident FARC fronts that refuse to demobilize, as well as a powerful right-wing opposition to the whole idea of peace. Though polls seem to indicate broad support for the peace deal, the list of questions regarding what a post-conflict Colombia will look like is long.
