Renewed Protests and More Violent Repression in Nicaragua

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, protests broke out once more in Nicaragua against the government of Daniel Ortega. When the opposition rejected Ortega’s efforts to restart talks because of what they labeled his obvious cynicism, they went back into the streets. The government responded, as it has repeatedly over the last year, with a violent crackdown on the protesters. Despite constitutional guarantees, the Ortega government has essentially outlawed political protests since November 2018. Journalists, in particular, were singled out for attacks by police and paramilitary groups, which led to heated commentary.
