Protests in Cuba During July 2021 Focused Attention in Latin America on the Legacy of the Revolution and Questions About Democracy

Beginning on July 11, 2021, Cubans repeatedly took to the streets of most of the nation’s cities in the largest anti-government demonstrations in almost 30 years. They protested against shortages of food, electricity, and medicine, as well as restrictions on individual liberties, while chanting “we want freedom,” “we are not afraid,” and “we want vaccines.” A surge in coronavirus cases, coupled with low immunization rates, added to long simmering tensions over the economy. While many leftist intellectuals and politicians in Latin American continued to defend the Cuban government, blaming Cuba’s problems on the U.S. embargo, critics pointed to economic failures and the total ban on political mobilization by opposition forces.
