Issue Jul 01-31 2025: STEG, or the Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Educación de Guatemala, is a trade union that represents and advocates for educators in Guatemala. After the Ministry of Education failed to meet the union’s demands for a salary increase and better working conditions, STEG announced a permanent assembly. As a result, on May 26, 2025, many of its associated teachers began to camp out in Constitution Square and continue to do so. Their protests have suspended classes in approximately 5,000 public schools.
