During Carnaval, people form unifying bonds with each other, while also validating their distinct desires through art, music, dress and bodily display. What is more, Brazil’s Carnaval 2018 was laced with artistic and political demonstrations nationwide, and the protests were simultaneously beautiful and bellicose. Political party scandals, economic crises, and an impending presidential election motivated festival participants to mobilize and demand transformations in the government and in society. The issues evoked during this Carnaval included corruption, racism, and homophobic and anti-woman violence.
