Presidential Hopefuls Begin to Make Themselves Known in Mexico

While the Mexican elections are a little more than a year away, several individuals have announced their candidacy, many as independents. The large number of presidential hopefuls is in part, a response to the uncertainty of the Mexican economy and never-ending security and drug-trafficking problems. The Zapatista National Liberation Army is even proposing a candidate in conjunction with the National Indigenous Congress. So far, discussions have focused on drug-trafficking, security, NAFTA, and Mexico’s relationship with the United States. The farthest left candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is currently leading in the polls, but only by a slim margin.
