Brazilian President Michel Temer has been floundering since the recent release of an audio recording that allegedly captures him in the act of signing off on the payment of hush money to Eduardo Cunha, the former President of the Lower House of the Brazilian Congress, who is now serving a 15-year prison sentence. Temer’s predicament is yet another turn in the colossal investigation into billions of dollars in kickbacks and illegal campaign financing, known as Operação Lava Jato or Operation Car Wash. His political allies seem to be abandoning him after the revelation, as well as his abortive move to use the army to restore order during protests.
