President Nayib Bukele, the Big Winner in El Salvador’s Legislative Elections

On February 28, 2021, El Salvador held municipal and legislative elections in which President Nayib Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party won an outright majority of seats in the nation’s unicameral legislature. Nuevas Ideas, known as “N,” eclipsed both the right-wing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista or ARENA party, and the left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional or FMLN, the two parties that had dominated Salvadoran politics since the end of El Salvador’s armed conflict in 1992. Despite widespread worries about Bukele’s authoritarian impulses and erratic behavior, a solid majority of Salvadorans voted for his allies. Political commentators struggled to come to terms with what his victory means for El Salvador, and perhaps for Latin America.
