President Javier Milei’s “Ley Omnibus” Fails in the Argentinian Congress

Argentine President Javier Milei’s La Libertad Avanza party (LLA) experienced a painful smackdown in Congress with the collapse of its ambitious “Omnibus Law.” As it faced certain turbulence and casualties in item-by-item voting, LLA congressional leader Óscar Zago sent it back for further negotiation in the various committees of the Cámara de Diputados, resetting the process at the beginning. Milei, on a trip to Israel when the bill went down, stormed onto social media (as is his want) and rage-tweeted into the night about the “traitors” who voted against the measure. The massive 646-article bill sought the privatizations of public companies and an increase of penalties for social protests, among other “reforms.” Political analysts and editorial writers had plenty to say.
