As a part of the peace treaty between the Colombian government and FARC in 2016 that ended the internal conflict in the country, a new postwar court, called the Jurisdicción Especial de Paz (JEP), was established and since 2018 has been investigating the events of the conflict in order to provide a narrative of the war and facilitate lasting peace. To this end, in February 2021, the JEP first announced the ‘Caso 3,’ or the case of the “false positives,” which examined the killing of civilians by agents of the state to present the dead as combat deaths thus inflating the perception of the state’s own success in the fight against insurgent FARC forces. On June 6th and July 15th, 2021, the JEP further announced indictments of various military and state personnel involved in these “false positive” cases. These findings and indictments will significantly influence the public’s perception of the internal conflict and the path towards peace.
