A Post-Castro Cuba Comes Into Murky View

On April 19, 2018, the National Assembly of Cuba confirmed Miguel Díaz-Canel as the new president of the Council of State, the country’s leader for all practical purposes. The parliament ratified the former vice president with the votes of 99.83% of the deputies present. Díaz-Canel replaces General Raúl Castro, who retires from the position after 12 years at the head of the country. However, as the new president clarified, Raúl Castro will continue to take the lead in the country’s most important decisions as General Secretary of the Communist Party. What this means for the nation is very much an unanswered question.
