Peru’s Continuing Crisis of Social, Economic, and Political Breakdown

Issue Jan 25-31 2023: By the end of January 2023, marches in Peru that led to often violent clashes with security forces had continued largely non-stop since December 7, 2022, the day former President Pedro Castillo was arrested after attempting to dissolve Congress and rule by decree. The protesters, many of them peasants and Indigenous peoples from the countryside, had blocked roads and caused fuel and food shortages in some areas, while also forcing airport closures, disrupting the economy, and clashing with security forces in Lima and other cities. They demanded immediate elections, President Dina Boluarte’s resignation, and dissolution of Congress. Even with Boluarte herself calling for early elections, Congress (dominated by the political right) remained unmoved. Pundits across the ideological spectrum offered thoughts.
