While the 2016 Colombian Peace Deal has been both criticized and praised internationally, its shortcomings have been emphasized during the coronavirus epidemic. The peace deal resulted in then-president Juan Manual Santos being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize but four years later, the result is a far cry from what was intended. With FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) groups returning to arms and right-wing paramilitaries threatening those who have attempted to transition to peace, the push for peace seems to be at a stalemate.
