Panamanian Strongman Manuel Noriega Dead at 83

!!!

The former commander of the disbanded Panamanian Defense Forces, General Manuel Antonio Noriega, who was called the “last dictator of Panama,” died on May 29, 2017 at the age of 83. Noriega, known as “the Man” by his supporters and “Cara de Piña” (“Pineapple Face”) by his enemies, ruled Panama from 1983 to 1989. He was a CIA asset during the latter days of the Cold War, and a specialist in counterintelligence operations, with sidelines in sundry nefarious activities. Noriega was ousted during a bloody U.S. military invasion in 1989. After being imprisoned in the United States, France, and Panama for almost 30 years on charges of drug trafficking, illegal arms trade, money laundering, assassinations, and disappearances, Noriega died in a hospital in the Panamanian capital. His passing inspired varying assessments of the U.S./Latin American relationship.
