Outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro’s Attempt to Challenge the Election in Brazil Fell Flat

Issue Nov 16-30 2022: In a move that people across the ideological spectrum expected, on November 24, 2022, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party (PL) called for a partial annulment of the October 30, 2022, presidential runoff election in which opposition candidate and former President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva of the Workers’ Party (PT) was reelected president. Clearly taking a page from Donald Trump’s anti-democratic playbook, it was an action Bolsonaro’s followers had been calling for and his opponents dreaded. Yet what surprised many people on both the right and the left was how quickly and definitively the “coup-lite” effort collapsed. With the military obviously uninterested in intervening, Brazilian democracy proved stronger than many people feared.
