Organized Labor Confronts President Macri in Argentina

President Mauricio Macri took office fifteen months ago while promising to spur economic growth through his investor-friendly, market-oriented programs. Until recently, organized labor had generally acquiesced to his efforts to cut labor costs, lower interest rates, and reduce the budget deficit. But that honeymoon of patience is apparently over. Striking teachers in Buenos Aires Province look to be the vanguard of a broader movement, in particular, a general strike, promised by the Confederación General del Trabajo de la República Argentina (CGT), for April 6, 2017. As the economy has tanked, and Macri has pushed what the labor movement sees as unfriendly policies, union members have begun to press their leaders in directions that are more militant.
