United States President Barack Obama recently took a tour around Latin America, hitting two very controversial cities on his journey. After spending time first in Havana, Cuba, he then moved on to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he spent two days in bilateral meetings with Argentine President Mauricio Macri, business leaders, and young entrepreneurs, as well as attending several memorial services. After the end of the Kirchner era in Argentina, and under the leadership of President Macri, the country has opened its doors to the United States. However, since Obama’s visit on March 24th coincided with the 40th anniversary of the coup d’état that brought about the last military dictatorship of Argentina, it generated intense debate throughout the country. The dictatorship committed atrocious crimes against humanity towards its own citizens, killing and “disappearing” over 30,000 people, including women and children, yet was supported by the United States government.
