Latin American governments used to represent a wide variety of viable political models: on the right, countries like Peru, Colombia, and Mexico were “models of neoliberal continuity” strong enough to resist populist threats; the more centrist countries of Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay were able to balance market and redistributive policies; and on the left, the governments of Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador, and Nicaragua cemented their claim to sovereignty and control over national resources while also including sectors of society that had traditionally been excluded.
