Nicanor Parra, Venerated Latin American ‘Anti-poet’ Dies at 103

!!!

–Written by Chris McCallum–

Celebrated Chilean poet Nicanor Parra passed away on January 23 at the age of 103. He collected all the most coveted prizes of Latin American literature as well as being a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. A recluse during his final twenty years, he more than made up for it by being a constant presence in the arts and letters (and sometimes the politics) of Latin America and the Caribbean dating back to the publication of his first book of poetry in 1937. He died at home in Chile of unspecified natural causes.
