The small size of Chimalistac, a neighborhood located on Mexico City’s southern fringe, belies its enormous importance in the history of Mexican cinema.  The setting of Federico Gamboa’s 1902 wildly successful novel Santa, Chimalistac was soon to become the location for the first “talkie,” or sound film, ever shot in that nation.
