Murder of Mexican Journalist Javier Valdez Cárdenas Sends Shock Waves Throughout Latin America

Javier Valdez was an award-winning reporter who focused on drug-trafficking and organized crime in Mexico. He was shot down on a street in Culiacán, the state capital of the northern state of Sinaloa, on May 15, 2017. As shocking as it was, sadly, his was just the most high-profile killing in a continuing surge of journalist assassinations in Mexico and Central America. Co-founder and editor of the online weekly RíoDoce, he was also a correspondent for the national newspaper La Jornada of Mexico City. His murder sparked international outrage and generated calls for the Mexican government to make good on its promise to protect journalists and confront impunity.
