More “Dialogue” Between the Maduro Regime and the Venezuelan Opposition

In mid-August 2021, representatives of the fractured Venezuelan opposition met with officials of the beleaguered government of Nicolás Maduro for yet another round of “dialogue” focused on finding a solution to Venezuela’s interlocking social, economic, and political crises. Earlier meetings took place in recent years in the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and Norway, and this time the Venezuelans met in Mexico. Even before the talks began, observers cautioned against unbridled expectations. The talks ended with plans for more talks. Editorialists and pundits gamed out the talks’ significance, or lack thereof, and tried to answer the question of what might be different this time.
