More Coup Rumblings in Bolsonaro’s Brazil

In the days before September 7, 2021, Brazil’s Independence Day, President Jair Bolsonaro made increasingly provocative and menacing statements about his nation’s Supreme Court (and other institutions of democratic government), obviously to rally his base and demonstrate that he has the backing of large numbers of voters. He called on his followers to flood the streets of Brazil on the 7th, particularly Brasilia and São Paulo, where he planned to give addresses. Commentators noted that it was shaping up to be an all-or-nothing demonstration of his political strength and of his chances for re-election (or perhaps coup d’état). On Independence Day, the response was less than over whelming, though anti-Bolsonaro protesters did answer the call in scores of Brazilian cities. Pundits and editorialists had much to say.
