Issue Mar 19-25 2025: On March 24, 2025, Argentines marked the 49th anniversary of the 1976 coup. The coup came during an already ramping-up death squad campaign that began during the government of Juan Perón’s widow and vice president, Isabel Perón, and helped jumpstart the so-called “Guerra Sucia,” which claimed over 30,000 lives. During the manifestations marking the date, human rights groups and opposition leaders criticized President Javier Milei’s denialist rhetoric regarding the extent of country’s ordeal. The anniversary came as stubborn and growing doubts regarding Milei’s ability to deal with Argentina’s major problems continue to spread. Large numbers of protesters took to the streets in the nation’s major cities. Pundits and editorialists had thoughts to offer.
